Extended Day Partner Highlight – Charleston Academy of Music January 11, 2024 Meeting Street Schools

What is the mission of your organization?

The Charleston Academy of Music is committed to providing access to exceptional music education, performance and community outreach to all, regardless of age, skill, gender, ethnicity or income.

Describe your programming with our MSS Scholars…What do y’all do? Why is it important? How will it make a positive impact?

The program is called Kidzymphony, where MSS scholars learn the art of performing on a musical instrument in an orchestra setting, in other words, as a group. We provided each scholar with a string instrument, and our faculty weekly works with the groups on building various musicianship skills. The program is important because it gives students a rare opportunity to experience music making. Its positive impact, however, lies far beyond a mere experience. Through the study of music performance students are learning skills such as focus, attention to detail, listening, perseverance to name a few – all of which enhances their academic performance, strengthens their emotional development and sets them on a path to success in anything they choose.

Why did you want to work with MSS? What do our organizations have in common?

MSS is a great partner because their vision and goals align with ours in the idea of empowering young people through excellence in their learning. Like us, MSA leadership is committed to quality education and the belief that any student can succeed when provided with the best resources and opportunities.
