Charleston Area Students to Perform in Free Concert Showcasing History of Soul Music in America

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Meeting Street Schools and the WatotoAcademy of the Performing Arts are partnering for a family-friendly production highlighting the history of Soul Music in America.

The performance will take place on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Burke High School.

The event is free and open to the public.

The event is titled, “That Sweet Soul of Music” Community Concert. It’s part of The Love America Concert Series. Organizers say the production will take you on a musical journey that honors the music and artists responsible for creating Soul Music.

According to the news release, Soul Music originated between the late 1950s and early 1960s and is a beloved American music style that combines elements of African-American Gospel music, Blues and Rhythm and Blues.

WatotoAcademy was founded by Donald O’Connor in Memphis, Tennessee in 1987. It focuses on powering academics and social emotional skills through rich experiences in the arts. Students can experience African and African American music, dance, performance styles, literature and history.

WatotoAcademy partnered with Meeting Street Schools to bring its performance arts programming to students in Charleston. It has a history of national and international performances.

According to a news release, Meeting Street Schools was founded upon the belief that all children deserve an excellent education regardless of their geographic or socioeconomic circumstances, and all children have the ability to excel in the classroom.
