Why did you decide to be a teacher?

“My teacher said I was smart, so I was.”

I decided to become a teacher in kindergarten because of my own teacher. She helped me discover my unwavering passion for education and a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of learning. From a young age, I have always found joy in acquiring knowledge and sharing it with others. Teaching provides me with the opportunity to inspire and guide students on their educational journey, fostering their intellectual curiosity and helping them realize their full potential. I am driven by a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of young people, empowering them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an ever-changing world. My decision to become a teacher is also rooted in a strong sense of advocacy for education equity, as I am committed to addressing disparities in access to quality education and ensuring that all students can thrive. I’ve always wanted to become the teacher that my past teachers were for me. Ultimately, becoming a teacher is not just a career choice for me; it is a calling—a calling to inspire, to empower, and to make a meaningful impact in the lives of my students.

Why do you choose to stay in the classroom?

I choose to stay in the classroom because it’s where I find immense joy, comfort, and a sense of belonging. There’s something truly special about the culture of the classroom—the energy, the laughter, the shared experiences—that makes it feel like home. Every day, I have the privilege of creating a nurturing environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive. Witnessing their excitement as they make new discoveries, overcome challenges, and build confidence fills my heart with joy and reaffirms my passion for teaching. The relationships developed within the classroom are priceless. The bond between teacher and students, as well as among peers, fosters a sense of community and support that is both heartwarming and empowering. Being part of this vibrant and dynamic classroom culture, where every voice is heard and valued, is what motivates me to continue making a difference in the lives of my students each and every day.

What is the most challenging part of being a teacher?

One of the most challenging parts of being a teacher is managing workload and balancing responsibilities. Oftentimes we face heavy workloads that include lesson planning, grading assignments, providing feedback, analyzing data, attending meetings, communicating with parents, and participating in professional development activities. With limited time, finding a balance between fulfilling these responsibilities while still maintaining personal well-being can be difficult. Juggling these demands while striving to provide high-quality instruction and support for my students requires me to continue to have strong organizational skills, time management, and resilience.

What is the most rewarding part of being a teacher?

The most rewarding part of being a teacher is witnessing the growth and success of my students. I love when they have that “aha moment” and realize their own potential. Seeing my students grasp a challenging concept, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals brings so much satisfaction. Building positive relationships with students and their families while witnessing their confidence and enthusiasm for learning flourish is deeply fulfilling. Knowing that I have made a meaningful impact on their lives, not only academically but also personally, creates a sense of pride and fulfillment. Additionally, receiving gratitude and appreciation from students, parents, and colleagues for the dedication and support reinforces the value of my work as a teacher. Ultimately, the opportunity to inspire, empower, and make a positive difference in the lives of others is what makes teaching such a rewarding profession.

Why did you choose to teach at Meeting Street Schools?

I was drawn to the school’s mission, values, and educational approach. Meeting Street Schools offers a supportive and innovative environment where you can make a significant impact on students’ lives. I enjoy working with the student population and collaborating with a dedicated team of educators. Additionally, the school’s commitment to educational equity and community engagement aligns with my own values and goals as an educator.

If you were to write a letter to yourself during your first year of teaching giving yourself advice, what would you say?

Dear First-Year Ms. Brown,

As you embark on this journey into the world of teaching, I want to offer you some advice from the perspective of someone who has walked the path you’re now on. First and foremost, know that challenges will come your way, and that’s okay. Teaching is a dynamic profession filled with highs and lows, successes and setbacks. Embrace these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. When you encounter difficulties, don’t be afraid to seek support from colleagues, mentors, and professional development resources. Remember, failing is a natural part of the learning process. Don’t let setbacks discourage you; instead, use them as stepping stones toward improvement. Reflect on your experiences, identify areas for growth, and adapt your approach accordingly.

Please understand that you won’t have all the answers right away, and that’s perfectly fine. You are not perfect, although you want to be. Teaching is as much an art as it is a science, and it takes time to develop your craft. Trust in your instincts, be open to feedback, and never stop learning. Your willingness to adapt and evolve as an educator will ultimately benefit your students.

Remember that in order to be the best teacher for your students, you must prioritize self-care and personal growth. Take time for yourself outside of the classroom to recharge and rejuvenate. Cultivate hobbies and interests that bring you joy and fulfillment. Invest in your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By nurturing yourself, you’ll be better equipped to nurture your students.

Lastly, know that you have chosen a noble and rewarding profession—one that has the power to positively impact the lives of countless individuals. Stay committed to your students, stay resilient in the face of challenges, and never lose sight of the difference you are making in the world. You got this girl!

2024 Black Excellence Award

On behalf of the Blue Note Bistro, congratulations to Shina Brown for being nominated and chosen for the 2024 Black Excellence Award! She has been selected because she demonstrates the highest standards of ethical conduct, integrity, civic and social responsibility within our community.

The month of February serves as a time to honor Black History and the exemplary individuals who paved the way for the betterment of our culture. During this time, when we remember past heroes, it is also important to acknowledge the accomplishments of modern-day trailblazers. While keeping with the tradition of celebrating Black Excellence at every level, we are choosing to honor those whose local contributions make our communities better daily. Every day, we all strive to build a better future for our children in hopes that they realize the dreams of our ancestors. In their shadows, are amazing
individuals harnessing the resilience, tenacity and determination they taught us to deliver services, advocate for equity, build us up, and keep us healthy.

Individuals like Shina Brown make Charleston better; our communities great; and, for that we are forever grateful. As Black History Month ends, we are setting the stage to put a spotlight on her contributions.
